The McNay Art Museum’s 2026 summer film series, LOVEfest, is a cinematic celebration of Robert Indiana’s LOVE — the iconic sculpture that’s been a cornerstone of the McNay’s collection since 2015. Greeting cards flattened LOVE into sentiment; Indiana’s own relationship with the subject was far more complicated. LOVEfest leans into that: films about artists wrestling with love — self-love or love of another — in ways that are rarely easy or straightforward. Off-kilter, messy, unexpected. Like a lot of great art.
Second screening: Paris Is Burning (1990). Jennie Livingston’s classic documentary follows the ballroom culture of late-’80s New York City — the balls, the categories, the shade — through the complex lives of the drag queens and transgender women who made it thrive, spotlighting the most legendary houses in the culture.
